Homemade wifi extender antenna1/22/2024 ![]() ![]() Those with external antennae, like mine, are easier to connect because you are just replacing the external whip antenna with the Yagi. The basic idea is that you need to solder a wire between the WiFi board's RF output and the driven element of the yagi antenna.īut USB WiFi modems come either with an internal antenna or with an external antenna. This is the most difficult part and depends on the electronic hardware you have. Now superimpose both prints, until they match at around element 10 or 11, and tack them together with scotch tape or white glue. Accuracy need not to be tight for the antenna to perform well. If your measurements match the numbers on the diagrams, then your print is to scale and you may proceed. Measure the size and position of a couple of elements on each prints. The second number, is the distance from the start of the diagram to the element, in millimeters. The first number is the length of the element in millimeters. ![]() You will also notice numbers next to the elements. The horizontal line is the backbone of the antenna which will be build out of popsicle sticks. The vertical bars represent the Yagi "elements" which will be made from paperclips. You will notice vertical bars crossing the horizontal line. Use a ruler or caliper to measure if the print is of correct scale. ![]() ![]() Make sure to set your printer's properties to ORIGINAL SIZE (not "best fit to page" ect.). I have also included the full sized unsplit template if your printer can handle large enough paper. So you have to print the template in two parts (labeled part1 and part2 in the zip file). The antenna is longer than an Letter sized or A4 sized paper. In the attached zip file below, are three png picture files. I'm in a similar situation (Damn Virgin Superhub!) but I'll be moving to powerline LAN adapters in the upcoming weeks. The most essential point in printing the template is getting the correct scale. Depending on your timescale, or if the former ideas aren't feasible, it might be worth getting a high-gain antenna to plug into one of the 3 SMA connectors instead. Remember the computer will likely block a large portion of the wifi signal, so if possible, rotate the computer so the back of it faces the router, or at least so the antennae aren't blocked by the case. I can only suggest that you try and find the optimum angle for the antennae (Older routers may polarise the wifi signal) or just angle them orthoganally. A better solution would have been to place the Adapter and antenna directly in the focal point of the dish. The second showed no improvement, probably because the coaxial satellite cable wasn't really compatible with the frequency of the signal. The first helped maybe by 10% (Hard to tell since I only had the default windows wireless manager). The second was a satellite dish directly wired to the wifi adapter with a Type N to reverse polarity SMA connector LINK. I've tried a couple of methods for my TP-Link WN722N, the first of which was a tin can folded into a roughly parabolic shape LINK We encourage and enjoy modding & hacking, but please do it safely and please remember that things can go wrong!ħ) Unorthodox solutions are what /r/techsupportmacgyver is here for, remember that asking for orthodox solutions is off-topic and belongs in /r/techsupport. made (hardware and/or software) are done at your own risk.
